Default First oil change (messy) on 2011 5.0 XLT 4x4

I've done my own oil changes since i was 14 (25 years now) and dang oil gets everywhere on this thing---Wow. I thought I had a big enough oil pan (18qt) but it was not wide enough to catch all the oil after taking filter off. Next time I will be taking off the skidplate with my air ratchet--Hopefully this will help. I can't stand for oil to keep dripping out from everwhere after finishing the job. I also added a Fumoto valve with the nipple. This will help next time I hope. Used Mobil 1 5/20 and a 500s filter from the dealer. Filter was $7.48 out the door. I cut open the original filter (1800 miles) and the pleats were clean on the inside.

I took a freezer bag & put it over the filter. It worked well for me .

Yeah these things seem to get messier as the years go on. I think im just gonna pay the money for the stealership to do it from now on. Its not worth the hassle plus yeah damn skid plate is a bitch to work around

I used a cereal box to redirect the oil into the drain pan so it didn't get all over.

I really dont like anyone working on my bike or my truck but I think Im with you on this one. Anymore you really dont save any money doing it yourself anyway. Prob just take mine to the stealership as well.

You are right. The Ford dealer will use the same Motorcraft 5W20 oil and FL820S filter that I would use. I can get an oil change and tire rotation for $35. Not worth it to me to do it myself anymore

This is where I'm torn. I've always done my own also but the dealer can change oil and rotate tires for less than I can buy the oil and filter for. But if I do it I know it's done correctly with the correct oil and not have an impact used on the drain plug and lug nuts. I use a torque wrench. They just impact everything to death.

Not sure about the location of the oil filter on the new 5.0 but my 09 5.4l is in a poor position. But being my fifth oil change, it's getting easyer and less of a mess. I'm interested in purchassing the fumoto valve and it would create less of a splash. Always used Castrol Edge but never seen a rebate on it this far, so I decided to use Pennzoil Platinum this time arround.
