Improve Gas Mileage

Springer Spaniels Rule
Nothing. we get what we are getting. 10% meth and other crap in gas is killing mileage. Every one is suffering.

Perhaps an ignition system upgrade? That allows you to increase your plug gap size. Then further advance your Base timing 4-6 degrees. The only Mod I know of that increases performance & MPG at the same time.
See link: http://fullsizebronco.com/forum/show...ht=timing+bump
Larger Spark Kernal = More complete Fuel ignition.
Further Base time advance = Increased "Rate" of compression. (not to be confused w/ Compression "Ratio")

workin for parts!!!
What are you getting now?..perhaps a tune up is in order..inflate tires, make sure no brakes are dragging, get rid of needless weight...IMO, the 4.9 was bad on mileage anyways. I had 2 of them and was never impressed with mileage..Had an 87 reg cab and 4 speed standard with 2 wheel drive and a 89 reg cab with a 5 speed and 4x4...both were terrible..My 08 has 2x the power and gets better mileage...I know there are lots that will disagree with my views, but that's what i experienced. They are a tough engine with good torque tho.

Apples to apples (EFI to EFI), "year" has less to do w/ it than what "you" do with/to it, including maintenance (or lack of). My 87 302 gets over 20mpg @ 65mph.
Nothing real special. A K&N drop in air filter, the Ignition upgrade as mentioned, stock Motorcraft plugs side gapped, all fluids Synthetic.....running 87 octane. 89 octane on occasion, if I'm going to go through both tank's non-stop on a road trip.
I have 178-182 PSI throughout all cylinders. As I mentioned, your compression is the best indication of what you can/should expect. If you're only looking at 120 PSI, a lot of your "get up & go", has already "got up & went"!
I like my 302, but "damn", that 300's a good engine!

Your Compression PSI is your best indication of what you can expect. Low compression PSI, you're beating a dead horse.

Yeah this weekend when I get a chance to go to my shop i'll do a compression test, and im going to do an entire MSD ignition system and get that drop in K&N. I was looking at the aftermarket intakes but the stock is better that those apparently in this truck but then again I drove a hooked up Honda Accord before this truck so im use to those kind of minor power adders, I know most of you aren't really interested but that car went pretty fast 190HP SOHC Honda Accord that I completely gutted Engine Mods: cold air intake hence the reason im saying all this lol, mild cam, headers and full exhaust no cat, stage 2 clutch and lightened flywheel, weighed about 1996lbs dry and 2028lbs wet and that power to weight ratio really did something for that car.

Improving Mileage
I'm new to this forum, but I have used some techniques that improved mileage on my other vehicles. What I have done is:
1- Went pure synthetic on all fluids (engine, transmission, differential. I've been using Mobil1 in the engines, Royal Purple on tranny and diff.
2- Switched to K&N for intakes. With just their air filter, I increased mileage on all vehicles by about 1.0-1.5 per gallon. With the intake system, I got an extra 0.5-1.0 per gallon.
Not much by first impression, but both also increased horsepower and throttle response. The mileage increases will pay for themselves after about 6-9 months, they way I drive (20K per year).
I've heard about E3 sparkplugs also being a significant improvement for both mileage and performance but haven't seen much in the way of actual user reports. Anyone out there using them?
Hope this helps.

My dads 300 I6 is a total HOG on gas. Worse than a big block for sure. 1/4 tank to go about 30 miles. its a bone stock 94 w 3.55 gears and only about 70k original miles. We dont know whats wrong with it. Its got new plugs wires cap and rotor. Nice truck but no one can afford to drive it lol.
