Default 96 f150 check engine light

Hey,
newbie, just purchased a 96 F150, got it inspected, only needed wipers. On way home from inspection place light came on. think maybe they left a sensor or connector not hooked up? I'm going to call them and take to a.zone/a.vance to run codes. know nothing about this truck except that i like it. it looks so much better ith the cap off. pics coming.

appreciate any/all replies

GOD Bless

yup check the codes first, could be something dumb like tighten the gas cap tighter. Enjoy that truck. Be good to her, and she'll be good to you in return.

For $2250 with 49,600miles on odo./20,000 on engine I plan on it. Things are already happening and I haven't even got tags yet, tomorrow for that. It's going to be work/play vehicle. Contracts are coming very soon. undecided about selling cap, yard not that big. spring/summer coming. wifey is going to want her backyard back. if anybody is interested in buying it, let me know. i am in MD.

Tomorrow i'll run codes and see what's up.

Thanks

I'll put 50 bucks on the egr valve. I have a 96 302 and did the same thing. I've owned 4 trucks from 94 to 96 and the first reason for the light was the egr. If so its like 80 bucks for a new one at advanced

Funny you say that, because I have replaced that same part on my 03 Deville at least 3x since I got it 18mos ago and it needs one now.
Evap purge solenoid or something like that.

How can I run the codes, az and avance both said they don't have a reader for obd1. Don't have nor know how to use the voltmeter/multimeter??? thing. I called inspection place, he said it might be gas cap. i plab on getting gas in a little bit. also about to spray it really good. supposed to be snowing here, school out 1hr early, not a flake to be seen.

If they're saying they can't scan the codes on your 96 F150, then they're full of crap because I scan the codes on mine all the time. 95 and older is OBD I and 96 is the new year of OBD II.

Three years ago, I bought my 96 F150 4x4 from a dealer in PA. After a few days of driving her to work, the CEL came on, like yours did. I took it to an emissions repair facility and they ran a check on it and said there was nothing wrong and turned the light off. It has not come on since.

I later read (somewhere) that the computer gets used to how the truck has been driven during its lifetime and if it gets readings that are approx 10% outside the norm, it throws the CEL on so you will get it checked out. I figure my driving must not have been within the "norm" of the last owner and thus the computer lit the CEL.

Autozone and Advance Auto Parts (I think) will do a free CEL check on OBD-II vehicles and will even give you a print-out of the resulting codes, if any. You could try resetting the CEL and see if it comes on again. If not, there is no problem. If it comes back on, get the codes read and post them here.

Good luck!

Couldn't find it, little later I saw a plug under glove box, was going to go back and see if that was it. According to above it has to be it. My truck was built in 8/95 but it's titled as a 96, what do I have I or II?

I know transmission takes Type F, someone said 10w-30 or 40. Yes/No?

Snowing now, might go out later to return a movie; will probably swing by and see if that is correct plug.

Codes were p0401&0402, Cleared and it hasn't come back in 20+ miles of driving. Really like this truck, hope to get a 4x4 in a year or so,going to put a blade on it and relly get it in.

P0401 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Flow Insufficient
P0402 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Excessive Detected
