Default catalytic converter

I have a 95 F150 4x4 with the 5.0 and automatic transmission. Started hesitating and bogging down after 10 or 15 miles or so. Read the codes and replaced EGR and sensor, fuel filter, throttle position sensor, and map. It seem to get worse after the EGR valve and sensor were replaced. It doesn't matter which tank I'm running on. Once everything cools down, it runs smooth as silk again. Also, when it is doing it's bogging down thing, I can throw it in neutral and the engine revs up-no problem. Put it back in gear and it bogs down, then runs fine for a bit. Could a clogged catalytic converter cause these symptoms?

It did show the EGR code, but that's gone. Now it looks like 172 and 173.

Good possibility. Sounds like mine did. If you remove the o2 ahead of the Cat & show 3 psi back pressure at the bunghole, your Cat's backing up. It will get very hot also. I've seen em glow. If clogged, and you have the 2 cat setup, toss em both & go w/ a single hi- capacity single unit. Cheaper/ better! Your timing isn't retarded is it? You can also temporarily remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe ahead of the catalytic converter and look for a change in performance.

Lean and rich, nice. Why did you change the EGR, MAP, and TPS?

The EGR and TPS I saw the codes for. The Map, I think the mechanic was just taking a shot at the problem.

Time for a new mechanic. You can throw parts at it youself & save the labor charge! And there's a lot of EGR position sensor codes that are caused by other than the EGR itself. The EGR is a valve. It can't provide a code itself.

If your not doing the work yourself, go to a muffler shop & tell them you want to switch to a single hi- capacity. The pipe diameter should go up coming of the Y connector. The first H/C Cat I had installed, failed prematurely because they didn't go up a size at the Y.*Post your own thread next time. They're free!
