Hi everyone...

This site is awsome and has a plethora of information.

I would appreciate some input to resolve my issue.

I own a 2005 F150 FX4 5.4l and absolutely love the truck.
In the 90,s I purchased 2 brand new Chevs and thought that they were the best.
Then in 2004 I purchased a 2004 RAM 5.7 and experienced hair thinning headaches and eventually Chrysler bought the RAM back from me.
In 2005 I purchased the 2005 F150 which has changed my choice of trucks forever, absolutely love the F150.

I have been so happy ever since I puchased the F150, the fit, finnish and ride quality of the F150 far surpasses any vehicle I have previously owned.

But enough boasting about the F150 and on to my question...

I have recently noticed that the 5.4l has been ticking/knocking.

When I drive up my residential street at about 30 kmh and let my foot off of the accelerator, I can hear a ticking/knocking sound for a couple of seconds as the rpms drop.
I have also noticed that if I drive very slowly 20 kmh or less and just feather the gas pedal, I can hear the engine ticking/knocking as well.

I change the oil every 5000 km and use Mobil 1 5w20.
The truck only has 57,000 km on it and I do not abuse it at all.
I live in central Canada and always let the engine run a couple of minutes in the winter and even let it run until the rpms drop below 1000 during the rest of the year.

I do not have warrenty any longer and would like to assess if this is something that I could fix myself without utilizing the old and sometimes costly process of elimination.

Is this problem more prevalent when the engine is cold or is this after it reaches operating temp?

I have only noticed the knocking sound thus far when the truck has warmed up to operating temp.

I have actually had a few friends point out the knocking sound as they were able to hear the knocking when I was pulling up the street and slowing to enter into their driveway.
It is kind of embarassing!

I have not noticed any reduction in power or response since the knocking has started.

The only parts on the vehicle that have changed in the last few months would be the addition of a K&N air filter and modding the air intake at the fender well to a true 3 inch inner diameter.
I disconnected the battery for 1 hour while modding the air intake to reset the air/fuel mixture.
The truck is alot more responsive after these mods which were done about 3 months ago.

If you read the manual it states that a bit of pinging is acceptable. Yes, it seems odd to me too. I guess the question is "is yours more than a bit". When I purchased my truck a couple weeks back I also notice pinging on light acceleration or going up a hill from stop. I bought from a dealer and they had the truck for a couple months so it may have been older gas that was causing the problem. I just used some fuel system cleaner (the kind you pour in the gas tank) and ran about 15 gallons of premium fuel through it. It cured the problem. Unfortunately, I think my problem was due to the old gas. I say try the cleaner and premium and see where you are after that. It is cheap and worth a try.

Cam phaser's. My 05 was loud but not to me. Some of my friends said it sounded like a diesel. If you search cam phasers you will find some videos with good sound. I've heard of guys replacing them only to have the noise return in 10-20,000 miles.
