Default Direction of thermostat?

Does anyone know what way should the thermostat should be facing on a 4.9 6 cylinder? I took my housing off today, and it didn't have one in it. So, I had one i bought awhile ago for it. it's been a long time time since i have replaced one.

I do believe that the part with the spring should go down into the engine.
Check the link below for a downloadable instruction list from Stant to be sure.
