I have also had a gassy smell in my 89 4.9L too. I checked the fuel lines and they look good. Any suggestions?

Have the plugs been changed recently? I know you just got the truck, did the dealer mention anything about the plugs??

Check your exhaust system for leaks, you can cover the tail pipe with a rag while it's running or pour some tranny fluid down the carb and look for smoke. There is a good possibilty your fuel isn't burning cleanly (spark plugs) and the smell is coming from an exhaust leak.

Check the forum for spark plug removal, I have seen a couple of years with the 5.4 that are a bear to change.
