Default 1983 ford f150 xlt lariat

my truck wont start it all started when i put new plug wires in an new cap...it spits through the carburetor after that i pulled all the plug wires pulled the number 1 plug and turned the motor till the piston was at the top and both of the valves were closed(top dead center i think) so i started lookin at the rest of the motor i also noticed that the carburetor butterfly is open ..wont shut ..wont move atall sooo thats locked...would a defective carburator make the truck not start and just spit through though it...it sounded to me like it was out of time btw stats are 351w .283 cam 4 barrel eldebrock carb ....

Yes it can be rewired 180 out! Also you can be ONE wire off and it will backfire and pop, **** and moan. If it was running before and now wont start, you DIDNT remove the distributor, then you probably are off one connector on the Dist. cap.

Oh, and if the carb butterfly is STUCK WIDE open, I really dont think you will WANT it to start till you get THAT fixed! Full throttle startup AINT COOL!

Pull the No#1 Plug rotate the eng slowly till compression builds in #1 Cyl. (put your finger in the spark plug hole and when it blows out, you are NEAR TDC! Look at the TIMING mark on the Harmonic Balancer and put the timing mark to "0" THAT is TDC! Make sure that the ROTOR in the distributtor is pointing to the #1 Cyl. spark plug wire. You should be good!

Are you sure it's not the choke that's stuck open? '83 has a choke, and if it's stuck open it won't affect the way the truck runs warm, it would just be hard to start when cold. The butterflies are on the bottom and the choke is on top.

That's not the butterfly, that's the choke. The butterflies are at the bottom of the carb, not on top. 4 butterflies, 1 choke plate.
