Just a Question
I was going to say I'm a novice, but I'm 63 years old, so I ain't a novice at many things. Maybe sky diving.
Anyhoo, the question is one that has been cluttering up my few remaining brain cells for a while: with an automatic transmission, why do I care about a tachometer? RPMs seem like too much information.
Looks cool, but no impact on my life, if you take my meaning. Any care to enlighten me?

Me, I kind of like the tach; another thing I can watch while driving...

When towing or descending a grade, you may want to have an idea of your engine speed because you may want to manually select gears in your automatic transmission....

the truck won't let itself blowup. Its smarter than you think. They all are. lol
Tachs are the other big gauge cause they don't want you to see how much gas you are burning. lol You can watch the RPMs for fuel economy (keep it below a certain RPM for example) but its kind of fluff nowdays unless you are waiting for it to wind down before changing gears in the snow/mud..

Retired and loving it!
I really use the tachometer when towing. I would hate to do without it. VERY nice to have for hills, both up and down...

I really think they are still there because people are so used to them being there and would freak if the BIG 3 would take them out.
