Default 2010 5.4 with a engine tick

Hello Everyone, I recently bought a 2010 F150 4X4 with a 5.4, it has 15700 miles on it. I notice it as a bit of an engine tick when running, louder when cold. I came off a Tacoma that has a Taco Tick as I heard it called, maybe its nothing, but I have the same truck at work that has no tick and it has 80K miles on it.

Any advice? The dealer looks at it on Monday, but wanted some advice from the fourm first.

I also have the 2010 5.4 but no tick. I had the Hemi Tick before and was told it was nothing and then broke a valve at 53K miles. Have them thoroughly check the valve train for sure.

Yep, sounds like a lifter or valve going out. Get it checked real soon.

5.4 has no pushrods either. It has overhead cams.

Could the ticking be noisy injectors?

The 5.4 and 4.6 are notorious across the years for injector tick and cam phaser noise. Many say the phaser issue has been gone for a few years, but I just had my looked after about 3 months ago on a 2010.

The ticking you are *likely* hearing is your injectors and is completely normal and nothing to worry about, but take it in to get them to listen to it anyways- doesn't hurt anything at all. Maybe it's something more malicious, but I suspect you're hearing the injectors.

Also keep in mind, the 5.4 is a big cast iron beast with what seems to be an over abundance of plastic pieces on it which leads to something akin to a resonating chamber. They make a lot of noise but that's pretty normal. Without hearing it, it's tough to say what it is.

HERE IS A SIMPLE PINPOINT TEST TO ISOLATE ENGINE NOISE, UPPER END - CAMSHAFT PHASER AND SPROCKET(S)
VERIFY THAT ENGINE IS MAKING THE NOISE THEN:
• Turn engine OFF.
• Disconnect the RH and LH Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) solenoid electrical connectors (see photo of pass side location -driver side similar ).
•Start the vehicle and elevate the engine rpm and then return to idle.
If the camshaft phaser and sprocket noise still audible the concern is not VCT related.
