Well first off iwill say i am guilty of playing in the mud with my truck and this probably has something to do with this. BUt Ive blown through 2 alternators and thought this whining/grinding noise was just the bad bearings in it from the mud. But i replaced the alternator and still has the sound. Its related to RPMs somehow and what seems to me like engine load. It seems if i slam the gas the sound is worse then when i just let off the gas regardless of rpms. So engine load makes it worse and its a intermittent sound. Sometimes it will just stop for a few seconds and then its back. Just curious of what i may be getting into. Im thinking just a belt. Also it just threw a cam positioning sensor code. Fairly easy to replace? and could that be my noise problem? Thanks

Not to panic you: but I would stop driving it until I could get under the front cover and see the phasers and timing chain. The cam position code is telling you that for some reason the cam is off the degree that it should be. This can be caused by several things in the VCT system. It's unlikely that the sensor just went bad and is throwing the code with the noises you're describing.

So you dont think replacing the cam position sensors will reposition it? or stop whatever is causing the noise? I think the exact thing my suner said was CMP sensor short circuit. One of my neighbors drives a 150 like mine and was an ex mechanic ill have to check it out with him for some help.

Short circuit is more likely the sensor. A general cam sensor position code is trouble. The noise however could still likely be from the VCT system.

ok so luckily its just the sensor throwing the code instead of the position itself. So what exactly is the VCT? Is it possible to have bad bearings in my belt tensioner pulley or something as well? Reguardless it will be straightened out this weekend. I just hate going to buy parts that i dont need.
