What transmission and how much fluid?
1991 F150 with a 4.9 and automatic. how do I tell that trans I have? I assume E4OD but really not positive. on the door jamb it says transmission "E". on the pan it just says Ford metric like most do. do I need to cound the bolts? also with a pan drop/filter change how many quarts of Mercon V will it hold? the pan was leaking bad because the bolts were not tight.

no OD button on gear selector but on the dash there is an OD off button so its gotta be the e4od. and would 13-16 quarts not be the capacity for a completely drained transmission including the torque converter? Im thinking a pan drop should permit the loss of about 6-7 quarts like stated above

Assuming it's the E4OD, 13 to 15 would be the capacity of the pan being drained and the torque converter being drained by using the torque converter plug. Also as I have mentioned on occasion, if you own a 2wd truck, you should look at a replacement pan for the 4R100 transmission. It will fit on your E4OD and it has the drain plug. Also, there is a reusable pan gasket as well for the 4R100 that fits the E4OD. I use both of these on my truck. I can provide parts numbers if you like. Both altogether run about $50-$60 total.

my fluid is in good shape, Im just pulling the pan to install a new gasket so I know my leak is fixed. why change pans?
since the fluid looks to be in such good shape Im gonna try to lose as little fluid as possible. these have an actual rubber gasket right?

You can get them on Expeditions and Excursions or heavy duty 97 up trucks like the F250 or F350. Or if you want to buy it new (around $35), you can order Dorman Part Number 265-805 from Summit or eBay.
