Electronic Locking Axle. How does it work ?

I'm having a bit of panic, I guess I assumed the elock option was just "better" than limited slip and I just ordered a 2012 4x4 with 3.73/elock rear.
I drive a lot in snow/ice and also tow a boat up some ramps. I want stability and traction, but am not doing off-roading. I don't want to be pushing switches or buttons, I want the thing to engage traction control when needed.
Did I make the wrong choice? Should I go back and order the limited slip instead???

I have limited slip which acts like a locker as both tires spin when they are both on the same surface such as ice, the rear end kicks out a little but the traction control on these trucks is very good and it stops the sliding sideways almost immediately. Im not sure if a locker when locked shuts the traction control off or not.
Also driving 65 on ice is very common and not difficult in ND if you know what you are doing. Our roads are mostly straight and flat so its not much of an issue, wouldnt recommend it on hill or curves though. Trying to turn or accelerate too fast is what gets you in trouble. You could drive 500 mph on pure ice and be perfectly fine if it was straight and flat.

Well I guess that was kind of what I thought - it was limited slip PLUS e lock, but after reading above, I"m afraid I got an open diff or completely locked depending on which **** I push, and that would NOT be good for the type of driving I do.

Technically its an open dif, but the electronic wheel slip will make like a limited slip. You will probably not even know the difference depending on how it acts, ask dcfluid, he knows lots about these and how they work.

Oy...
So I ordered my Fx2 2wd with the 3:31 Electronic Locking Diff.
Was that a mistake? I decided on that as I'm going to be towing a 7000 pound trailer several times a year and thought that would be better for towing, especially if I am on some gravel roads.
On order, so it is too late now.
It seems like I did ok, but I wouldn't mind an opinion or two.

No. You weren't paying attention. 3.31 is not available on 4x2s with EcoBoost engine.
4x2 has 3.15 standard ratio, with 3.55 and 3.73 options. You can choose open axle or e-Locker with any of the three ratios.
Limited Slip with 3.73 ratio is part of the HD payload pkg on both 4x2s and 4x4s, and cannot be ordered without the HD payload pkg.
But 3.31 is standard on 4x4s, with 3.55 and 3.73 options. 4.10 ratio is available only on an FX4 with an EcoBoost engine, E-Locker diff, 20" tires and the max trailer tow pkg.

I stayed 3.31 for the MPG and it still nets me 7900 pounds towing. My trailer is 7000 max weight, but will likely weigh in loaded between 5500 and 6000 max. That leaves me plenty of overhead and still makes the truck capable enough for my needs.
I looks like the 3.31 with Electonic locking diff was the best if only good option without stepping up to one of the limited slip in a different ratio.
